Botswana in a Suitcase
The Embassy participated in an event where Batswana in Witten presented a Suitcase full of Botswana cultural items to Caritas, a non-governmental organization. The event themed “Country in a Suitcase” is a joint project by Caritas and the Red Cross where nationals of different countries are given an opportunity to present their cultures in a suitcase.

Batswana in Witten and the surrounding areas led by Michael Lebang filled up the suitcase with items such as Mothubane (a 3 legged pot), loselo, lohetlho, tlatlana, wooden spoon, phate, seditsi, animal bell, nkgo, sego just to name a few. The items were presented as if it’s Dikgafela (traditional harvest festival) as men, women and children sang and danced to the Botswana traditional songs.

This suitcase will be kept by Caritas and it will be borrowed by schools and other organizations who wants to learn more about Botswana, and during those times Ms Lebang will accompany the suitcase in order to explain its contents and how they are used in Botswana. She will also be entrusted in making sure that the contents are kept properly.

Partnership with a School in Oelde

On 5th September 2016, the Embassy paid an official visit to the Thomas-Morus-Gymnasium (TMG) in Oelde, a town in the Federal State of North Rhine Westphalia. This initiative for a school partnership program in Germany is supported by Dr. Reinhold Festge, President of the German Engineering Association (VDMA).The Embassy briefed staff, students and invited guests who included the town Mayor, Mr. Karl-Friedrich Knop about Botswana’s history and educational system.

The collaboration with Botswana will include exchange of students and teachers providing an opportunity to learn the history and culture of Germany as part of preparing them for a fast globalising environment. The school welcomed the possibility of a twining project with a school in Botswana. TMG, already has existing student exchange programmes with schools in France, Italy, Spain and the United States of America. Botswana will be the first African partner country.

Partnership with a School in OeldeTMG is a UNESCO Associated School and has been awarded the label ‘School without Racism’. Thus, apart from the focus on academic development, its education also aims at tolerance, democracy and human rights, values that our schools in Botswana subscribe to.

Botswana: Gateway to Southern Africa

The Embassy of the Republic of Botswana in collaboration with Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC), IHK Munich and Upper Bavaria organised a Botswana Business Roundtable meeting on 16th June 2016 at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Munich. The event held under the theme, ‘Botswana: Gateway to Southern Africa’ afforded an opportunity for the Embassy to present investment opportunities available in Botswana. The event, the first in Munich, also provided a platform for the Embassy to present Botswana to the German business as an investment destination. Most of the participants in attendance were from the energy and renewable technologies sector.

Mr. Tshephang Kelatile, Director Investment Promotion Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) provided an in-depth information on investment opportunities available in Botswana amongst all the various sectors and incentives offered.
