Golden Jubilee

PART ONE
The Embassy of the Republic of Botswana in the Federal Republic of Germany commemorated the 50th anniversary of Botswana’s independence by hosting two events. On 30th September 2016, the Embassy hosted an official dinner at Maritim Hotel for 200 guests consisting of German Federal Government representatives, the Business Community and other Embassy stakeholders and a number of Batswana in Berlin.

Speaking at the dinner, the Regional Director for Sub-Saharan Africa from the Federal Foreign Office Ambassador George Schmidt commended Botswana for being exemplary. He also implored all other countries to collaborate with Botswana and learn how she arrived at the development level she is with very limited resources. He further informed the guests that while he has been worry of negative media reporting on Africa he recently came across positive report on Botswana from one of the German newspaper articles. This corroborated the fact that Botswana is well respected and her success story is well known.

Guests at the event were served Botswana cuisine (seswaa, letshotlo, morogo wa dinawa, samp and beans). The event was graced by the students from Rainbow English Medium Secondary School in Gaborone who were on their Annual Exchange Programme with the Schickhardt Gymnasium Herrenberg. The students also entertained the guests with traditional dance presentation.

Batswana in Germany

PART TWO
On 1st October 2016, the Embassy hosted an independence party for all Batswana living in Germany, their families, the German Botswana Friendship Association and friends of Batswana. The Ambassador shared with Batswana in Germany, His Excellency Lieutenant General Dr. Seretse Khama Ian Khama’s independence message. president-of-the-republic-of-botswanas-independence-message

Her Excellency Tswelopele Moremi launched the Batswana Association in Germany (BAG) a forum that was established during a meeting with Batswana in March 2016. Similarly Botswana Cuisine was served.

BOT50 Promotional material was displayed at both events and the Embassy gave away gifts of Cups with BOT50 logo as souvenirs to guests. The Ngwao Boswa Museum in Francistown displayed promotional material, while the Re Batswana Music Ensemble Musical Group from Botswana and Marimba group of German nationals from Oberhausen (some of who have worked and stayed in Botswana) provided entertainment respectively.
