Botswana: Gateway to Southern Africa

The Embassy of the Republic of Botswana in collaboration with Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC), IHK Munich and Upper Bavaria organised a Botswana Business Roundtable meeting on 16th June 2016 at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Munich. The event held under the theme, ‘Botswana: Gateway to Southern Africa’ afforded an opportunity for the Embassy to present investment opportunities available in Botswana. The event, the first in Munich, also provided a platform for the Embassy to present Botswana to the German business as an investment destination. Most of the participants in attendance were from the energy and renewable technologies sector.

Mr. Tshephang Kelatile, Director Investment Promotion Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) provided an in-depth information on investment opportunities available in Botswana amongst all the various sectors and incentives offered.

GERMAN BUSINESS DELEGATION VISIT BOTSWANA

Business Delegation

A fifteen (15) member business delegation from Germany led by Afrika-Verein (German Africa Business Association) visited Botswana from the 11th to 13th April 2016 to explore business opportunities in the country. The delegation was officially welcomed by the Assistant Minister of Trade and Industry Honourable Mr. Sadique Kebonang.

Sectors of interest were mining, energy and infrastructure, as well as healthcare, automation, financing and security. The forum provided an opportunity for business roundtables as well as B2B-meetings with local and international companies doing business in Botswana. Separate meetings were held with the Ministry of Transport and Communication, Ministry of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources as well as Bank of Botswana. This meetings gave the delegation a platform for direct exchange of information on specific projects.

This visit opened possibilities for German companies to understand the business culture in Botswana. It further strengthened collaboration between Afrika-Verein (German Africa Business Association) and the Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC). To cement this collaboration, the Chief Executive Officer of Afrika-Verein Mr. Christoph Kannengiesser and the Chief Executive Officer of BITC Mr. Letsebe Sejoe signed a Memorandum of Understanding for closer cooperation.

BOTSWANA OFFICIAL PARTNER COUNTRY OF ITB BERLIN 2017

Hon. Minister Tshekedi Khama

The Minister of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism Honourable Tshekedi Khama attended the 50th International Tourism Bourse (ITB) Berlin 2016 from 09th – 11th March in Germany. A total of twenty-nine Travel and Tour Operators from Botswana participated at the ITB.

On 9th March 2016 Botswana was welcomed as the Official Partner Country for ITB Berlin 2017, first ever Partner Country from Southern Africa. The official announcement of the partnership between Botswana and the World’s Leading Travel Trade Show was made during the signing ceremony by Honourable Tshekedi Khama, Minister of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism of the Republic of Botswana and Dr. Christian Göke, Chief Executive Officer of Messe Berlin GmbH. The partnership will, among others, enhance international awareness of the country as an investment and tourism destination and this demonstrates Botswana’s commitment to the tourism industry as well as continued commitment to protecting the environment.

Botswana’s participation at ITB continues to generate interest among the Germans and general public.
